Simply everything at really reasonable prices. Scuba diving, parasailing, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, banana boat riding, jet skiing.... You can learn to sail, hire snorkelling equipment or take a scuba course and go diving around some of Pattaya's offshore islands. Jomtien beach is Thailand's No. 1 windsurfing spot.

Not content? Then there's horse-riding, bungee jumping, paintball and world-class golf courses within easy reach. The Siam Country Club, one of the best golf courses in the Kingdom, is just 10 kilometres from the Beach Road.

What to See

Botanical Gardens, odd museums like Ripley's "Believe It Or Not " Elephant demonstrations, Vegas type shows, Underwater World and Amusement Parks.
Or why not simply hire a boat or take a snorkelling trip around one of the offshore islands like Koh Larn. (See attractions)

Nightlife

Pattaya's 4 kilometre beach road contains one long entertainment district, but South Pattaya still provides the legendary afterdark reputation. It's not all just go go bars and loud music in Pattaya, there are trendy restaurants, piano bars, music clubs, karaoke and the famed flamboyant transvestite cabaret shows. Check out Pattaya nightlife.

Absorb centuries of history and culture along Thailand's "River of Kings" on board the legendary Mekhala. Cruise either upstream from Bangkok or downstream from the ancient capital of Ayuthaya, staying overnight alongside a traditional Buddhist temple. Ayuthaya, in former times, was the capital of Siam, a great trading city and the envy of the whole region before it was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. The ruins still remain a haunting reminder of its former spendour.

The Mekhala, a former rice barge, transformed to a floating boutique hotel, provides your accommodation, complete with air-conditioned cabins and comfortable chairs on deck to view life along the waterways. Unforgettable.

The Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya or Ayutthaya in short, is one of Thailand's historical and majestic highlights. Serving as the Thai capital for 417 years (1350 1767: Kingdom of Ayutthaya), it was once glorified as one of the biggest cities in the world a Southeast Asia center for civilizations. During the 17th century, most foreign visitors to Ayutthaya, traders or diplomats alike, claimed Ayutthaya to be the most illustrious and glittering city that they had ever visited. The map of Ayutthaya published in 1691 by Simon de la Loub?re in Du Royaume De Siam is proof of such recognition.

The Kingdom of Ayutthaya reached its apex in terms of sovereignty, military might, wealth, culture, and international commerce in the 16th century when the Kingdoms territory was extended far beyond present-day Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. Ayutthaya even had diplomatic relations with Louis XIV of France and was courted by Dutch, Portuguese, English, Chinese and Japanese merchants.
Visitors can explore and appreciate Thai history in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, which is situated only 86 kilometers north of Bangkok. Visitors to Ayutthaya can marvel at its grandeur reflected through numerous magnificent structures and ruins concentrated in and around the city island surrounded by Maenam Chao Phraya, Maenam Pa Sak and Maenam Lopburi.

More importantly,Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park, an extensive historical site in the heart of Ayutthaya city, has been included in UNESCO's World Heritage list since 13 December, 1991.

The Past

The Kingdom of Ayutthaya was built and developed in leaps and bounds. The ruins in Ayutthaya that survived the test of time embody both the glorious and ignominious stories of the Kingdom.

This ancient capital of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, had thirty three kings of different dynasties and reached its peak in the middle of the18th century. A magnificent city with three palaces and over 400 magnificent temples on an island threaded by canals Ayutthaya was truly an impressive city that attracted both Europeans and Asians. After a 15-month siege the Kingdom of Ayutthaya was conquered and completely destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. When King Taksin the Great finally liberated the Kingdom, a new dynasty was established and the capital was moved to Thonburi.

The seal of Ayutthaya depicts a conch on a pedestal tray placed in a small castle under a Mun tree. According to legend, King U-Thong, founder of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, discovered a beautiful conch buried in the ground being prepared for the establishment of the seat of his Kingdom. Consequently, he had a tiny castle built to house the shell. Hence, the provincial seal.

The Present

Today, there are but groups of crumbling ruins and rows of headless Buddhas where once an empire thrived. The temple compounds are still awe-inspiring even in disrepair and a visit here is memorable and a good beginning for those drawn to the relics of history.

The architecture of Ayutthaya is a fascinating mix of Khmer (ancient Cambodian style) and early Sukhothai style. Some cactus-shaped obelisks, called prangs, denote Khmer influence and look something like the famous towers of Angkor Wat. The more pointed stupas are ascribed to the Sukhothai influence. For new arrivals who had limited their visit to Bangkok, similarities may be noted with the riverside Wat Arun, an 18th-century structure that was built in the so-called Ayutthaya style, a melding of Sukhothai Buddhist influences and Hindu-inspired Khmer motifs.

Ayutthaya is administratively divided into 16 districts: Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Ban Phraek, Bang Ban, Bang Pahan, Bang Pa-in, Amphoe Bang Sai, Bang Sai, Lat Bua Luang, Maha Rat, Nakhon Luang, Phachi, Phak-Hai, Sena, Tha Rua, Uthai and Wang Noi

Do's and Don't in Thailand

The Monarchy : Thai people have a deep, traditional reverence for the Royal Family, and a visitor should be careful to show respect for the King, the Queen and the Royal Children.

Religion : Visitors should dress neatly in all religious shrines. They should never go topless, or in shorts, hot pants or other unsuitable attireIt is acceptable to wear shoes when walking around the compound of a Buddhist temple, but not inside the chapel where the principal Buddha image is kept.

Each Buddha image, large or small, ruined or not, is regarded as a sacred object. Never climb onto one to take a photograph or do anything which might indicate a lack of respect. Buddhist monks are forbidden to touch or be touched by a woman, or to accept anything from the hand of one. If a woman has to give anything to a monk, she first hands it to a man, who then presents it.
Social Norms :

Thais don't normally shake hands when they greet one another, but instead press the palms together in a prayer-like gesture called a wai. Generally a younger person wais an elder, who returns it.

Thais regard the head as the highest part of the body, literally and figuratively. Therefore, avoid touching people on the head and try not to point your feet at people or an object. It is considered very rude. Shoes should be removed when entering a private Thai home.
Public displays of affection between men and women are frowned upon.

Special Advice :

- Beware of unauthorised people who offer their services as guides. For all tourist information, contact the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Tel : 1672. For information about Bangkok, contact the Bangkok Metropolitan Tourist Bureau, Tel : 0 2225 7612-4.

- Observe all normal precautions as regards to personal safety, as well as the safety fof your belongings. Walking alone on quiet streets or deserted areas is not recommended. Be sure that all your valuables-money, jewellery, and airline tickets are properly protected from loss. Visitors needing assistance relating to safety, unethical practices, or other matters, please call the Tourist Police at Tel: 1155.

- Drop your garbage into a waste container. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration id no strictly enforcing the law in an effort to keep the city clean and healthy. The fine will be imposed on a person who spits, discards cigarette stubs, or drops rubbish in public areas.

- Do not get yourself involved with drugs. Penalties for drug offences are very severe in Thailand.

Chiang Mai

Experiencing the merging of the past into the present in Chiang Mai where locals are proud of the city's 700-year history. Its rich traditional heritage and unique culture is a perfect foundation for the development of the city. Chiang Mai is one of the few places in Thailand where it is possible to find in the heart of the city centuries-old chedis and temples next to modern convenience stores and boutique hotels. The original city layout still exists as a neat square surrounded by a moat with vestiges of the fortified wall and its four main gates offering prime access to the old town.

For years, tourists have mistaken Chiang Mai as the northern junction and the base from which they can explore other provinces. The phrase "a day in Chiang Mai is enough to see things around" was common. Today, tourists are surprised by the fact that there is always something new to discover Chiang Mai. Intriguing diversity among ethnic tribes coupled with breathtaking scenery makes Chiang Mai one of Asia's most attractive tourist destinations. Two weeks in Chiang Mai may not be long enough for serious travelers.

The old city of Chiang Mai with its fascinating indigenous cultural identity such as diverse dialects, cuisine, architecture, traditional values, festivals, handicrafts and classical dances is a prime location in its own right. In addition, the presence of hill tribes and their wealth of unique cultures enhance Chiang Mai's distinctive diversity.

Chiang Mai is also blessed with pristine natural resources of mountains (dois), waterfalls, and other nature-based tourist attractions. At the same time, Chiang Mai residents are warm, gracious and congenial providing authentic hospitality making visits memorable and meaningful. Moreover, visitors from all walks of life can collect handicrafts of silk, silver and wood produced locally as timeless souvenirs. Chiang Mai is a place where both backpackers and luxury tourists can enjoy themselves to the fullest.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia (AP) — The sky went black and a thunder-like roar filled the air. Some witnesses remember hearing one or two explosions. But few had time to see the searing hot gas cloud surge from the volcano before it engulfed their village, incinerating 60 people.
That was in 1994. Now, with Indonesia's Mount Merapi again emitting lava and gas clouds, survivors of the last eruption a dozen years ago told of its horrors — and urged people resisting evacuation this time to flee the danger zone.

"The trees caught fire and everything fell down" in 1994, said Maryoto, who sustained massive burns to his face and body. "I was aware of what was happening, but couldn't feel anything. It was so hot." Like many Indonesians, Maryoto uses one name.

The volcano in the middle of Java island continued spewing lava and gas clouds Tuesday, but not as violently or often as a day earlier, which saw the most activity since the peak began erupting again several weeks ago.

Pattaya A Travelers Paradise

Pattaya is nestled along a picturesque bay on the East Coast of the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 170 kilometers southeast of Bangkok. From a fishing village in the 1960's, Pattaya has emerged as the favorite Southeast Asian vacation center. A fascinating escape where tourists, holiday makers and vacationers from around the world unfold an incomparable array of possibilities to unwind during an exotic holiday beach vacation. Unlike other beach resorts, where natural surroundings are used as magnets to attract tourists, Pattaya makes an all-out attempt to provide the best of everything. Here, everything means everything a tourist can imagine while on holiday: recreation, entertainment, sports, sightseeing and fun. To put it simply, Pattaya is a paradise for everyone, as it has a variety of attractions suitable for all types of visitors. This is the place where you can fill your day, from dusk to dawn, with endless activities, or you may choose to do nothing at all and relax. The PastPattaya's name was originated from the march of Phraya Tak (later known as King Taksin the Great) and his followers from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi just before the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom to the Burmese invaders in 1767.When Phraya Tak's army arrived in the vicinity of what is Pattaya today, he encountered the troops of Nai Klom who tried to intercept him. When the two leaders met face to face, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak's dignified manner and his army's strict discipline, thereby surrendering without a fight. The place where the two armies confronted each other was later called Thap Phraya, which means the Army of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which happens to mean the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season. Today the spelling of the name has been simplified to Pattaya. For centuries, Pattaya was a small fishing village almost cut off from the outside world. But a big change occurred on 29 April 1961 when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who would join the Vietnam War arrived in Pattaya for relaxation. Soon, sleepy Pattaya became Thailand's premier and most successful beach resort, which annually attracts hundreds of thousands of pleasure-seeking visitors. A full range of accommodations from super deluxe hotels to bungalows and mini-pocket guesthouses replaced fishermens huts along the beach. Fishing vessels were adapted to become tourist boats and swimmers and sunbathers from various parts of the world frequented the quiet powdery golden beaches. Places of nighttime entertainment have also sprung up and are popular among international tourists. The PresentPattaya currently integrates the delights of a 1st class beach resort, city-like dining, shopping and night entertainment facilities with more than 300 assorted hotels, thousands of shops, restaurants and bars. In addition, there are an array of sports and recreational activities including beaches, golf courses, tennis courts, go-kart, gyms for working out, weight lifting and Thai-boxing gear. Mount Merapi eruption
brings back horror

Enlarge By Ed Wray, AP

Mount Merapi, in the middle of Indonesia's Java island, continues spewing lava and gas clouds Tuesday.

The relative lull did not mean the danger was over, scientists cautioned.

"That is Merapi," said Ratdomopurbo, the region's chief vulcanologist. "She is always fluctuating."

Scientists monitoring Merapi say the current activity will not result in a massive horizontal explosion, but warn that villagers living high on its slopes are again at risk of pyroclastic flows.

The flows are made up of a lower layer of coarse rock fragment, that bursts forth like a shotgun blast. The top layer is composed of turbulent ash and volcanic gas. They move together at speeds of 50 to 100 mph, and reach temperatures of up to 1,500 degrees.

Like most victims on the morning of Nov. 22, 1994, Maryoto was at a wedding in Turgo village on the mountain's western slopes when the 9,800-foot peak erupted.

His wife, Kasiyem, was selling vegetables in the market when the volcano erupted. She was unharmed. When it was finally safe to return home, she said, she saw bodies that were "black, scorched — just like pieces of coal."

The pair now live with 120 other survivor families in a cul-de-sac the government built especially for them. It lies 2 1/2 miles below their old village, far enough from the peak to be considered safe.

Turgo has since been repopulated, but has been off-limits since Saturday, when the government ordered the evacuation of its inhabitants, along with about 5,000 other people closest to the crater.

Like most victims on the morning of Nov. 22, 1994, Maryoto was at a wedding in Turgo village on the mountain's western slopes when the 9,800-foot peak erupted.

He was in the kitchen and was trapped under one of its walls, perhaps shielding him from the heat and saving his life.

Turgo has since been repopulated, but has been off-limits since Saturday, when the government ordered the evacuation of its inhabitants, along with about 5,000 other people closest to the crater.

Officials are manning barricades on the roads leading to the evacuation zone, stopping vehicles from entering. However, they let residents return to their fields and livestock during the day.

A few young men are allowed to stay in the villages overnight to guard against thieves.

But some people are refusing to leave at all, citing mystical beliefs that spirits watch over the volcano and will warn them if there is any danger.

"You can buy possessions, but you can't replace lives," said Kasiyem in an interview on the porch of the couple's two-room house. "They should come down."

Other survivors of the 1994 eruption said the mountain showed no sign of increased activity beforehand and that they received no warnings from the government's volcanology center.

The sight of more clouds on the mountain — locally called "shaggy sheep clouds" because they resemble tightly curled balls of wool as they roll down the slopes — has stirred bad memories for many.

"My friends said come and look at them (the clouds)," said Poniyem, who lost her 3 1/2-year-old son and her mother and father in the disaster, and was badly burned on her legs, hands and back. "I said to them, 'No way,' and stayed in the house.
